Sponsorship Competence Assessment
Being a project sponsor is an active leadership role – you are the owner of the project’s business case and the guardian of its value. Research shows that having an actively engaged sponsor is the top driver of project success, yet many projects lack this engagement.
This tool helps you self-assess your competencies so you can identify strengths and gaps. It’s conversational and easy to use – let’s ensure you’re set up for success in your sponsorship role!
How to Use This Tool & Rating Scale
How This Assessment Works
You will rate your knowledge and ability across the six core competence criteria for project sponsors as defined by the Praxis Framework. For each area, select a rating from 0 to 5 based on the APM competence scale. After rating all criteria, click “Show Results” to see your overall profile. The tool will display a chart of your scores and tailored suggestions for any area where you scored below 3 (Competent).

- 2 Practised – You have a working knowledge and can describe the competency. You have some experience practicing it under guidance, typically in straightforward situations.

- 4 Proficient – You possess a detailed, in-depth knowledge, even in complex situations. You apply it independently and can critically evaluate or adapt methods. You may also mentor or supervise others.
- 5 Expert – You are an acknowledged expert. You have in-depth knowledge in novel and complex situations and can develop new approaches. You educate others and are recognized as a go-to authority.
