THIS WEEK’S FOCUS
We continue the focus on the core factors that make for successful projects.
Give a great idea to a bad team and they will mess it up. Give a bad idea to a great team and they will make it work
Get the wrong people at the wrong time, and you can end up with a toxic bog of big egos, people not using your product or idea, or worse, rallying against you as the harbinger of change!
Don’t let that happen.
These tools have really helped me, and have been informed by really experienced change managers who I’ve been lucky enough to have worked with.
Get the people right.
Why this is IMPORTANT
As a quick example. A few years ago, I took on a role to set up a new function inside a business.
We started from scratch. Things were moving until the executive sponsor grew uneasy about spending money.
Their peers from other departments were putting on pressure. They didn’t want to champion the project.
We did some good things, but only a fraction of what was really needed. A tragedy, because the foundations were nearly there for much bigger impact.
WISDOM gained from experience
Looking back, there are two things I’d do differently:
Easy to say in hindsight. Hard to see at the time, unless you’ve got the diagnostic tools and templates to make those dynamics visible.
That’s what I am giving you today, two scripts/templates.
WISDOM gained from experience
Together, these will help you avoid the trap I fell into: a good project cut short by a lack of an executives self-belief.
Tuesday Action
Download the two free tools and use them on your current project. Even 10 minutes spent mapping allies and influencers could save you months of wasted effort.
“Go far alone, go far together.”
See you next Tuesday (there’s a really big announcement coming)!
