THIS WEEK’S FOCUS

We focus on the core factors that make for successful projects.

  • The hidden root cause behind burnout and failing projects.
  • Why senior leaders and PMs see resourcing so differently.
  • Six proven steps to win buy-in and secure support.

6 steps to fix the #1 reason projects faIL

Welcome to Success Factors Discovery, your weekly email for enjoying projects + delivering with confidence.

I often think about the number one cause of burnout, in the profession with the highest rates (and no, this isn’t a joke about firefighters or furnace workers).

Nearly 50% of people leading change (i.e. project managers) report burnout at some time or another. This is the project failure we should be talking about.

The Main Cause?

44% of project managers say a lack of resources is a top challenge.

Burnout and stress are symptoms. Resourcing is the leading cause. But what’s the root cause?

This stat gives us a clue: 43% of project managers feel teams are understaffed, but only 20% of senior leaders agree.

The Root Cause?

Projects often fail to get the buy-in, support, and resources they need from senior managers, or finance.

  1. The overlooked way to cut stress in half.
  2. Why project leaders don’t need to carry projects alone.
  3. Where to find communities that give you confidence and support.

The Solution

Take a page from the playbook of thousands of experts and apply these six steps:

1. Ask why
Take your time here. Describe what the project is to deliver, and why this matters to those who can make or break it. For many projects, this includes senior management and finance.

2. Find your Yoda
With this newfound support, make the case to find a guide, someone who has done it before and builds confidence in others. You don’t always need them full-time, but you do need their wisdom.

3. Get people on the bus
Everyone needs a support network. A good team will help make the case for additional resources.

4. Make friends & keep them friendly
One in three failed projects lacks strong stakeholder engagement. Getting key influencers on side is one of the fastest ways to boost your chances.

5. Recognise your project is not unique
If you want more support from senior management, show them how others delivered similar projects and what resources they used. This will super charge your access to the people and support actually needed.

6. Look for tried & tested options
Humans are hardwired to commit to one choice. Resist this impulse. Compare alternatives to see your preferred option in a new light. Choosing what’s been tried and tested is one of the best ways to deliver on time and avoid complaints.

Tuesday Action

Think about one of your live projects. Download the tool and complete the complexity assessment.

Consider whether you have access to the right level of a Master Builder (your “Yoda”). If not, go back to step 1 and make the case for the right experience.

Time and time again, projects that go wrong come back to resourcing. It starts with getting gatekeepers on board, then finding someone who has walked the path before and can help you avoid the scars.

They’ll help you enjoy the journey, and avoid becoming another statistic.

See you next week,

Greg

Confluity Project Model sitemap

Model overview

What are Jobs?

The model is organised into three Jobs:

Job 1: Set the Direction - shape the purpose into options and a preferred way forward.

Job 2: Prove It Works - test assumptions and reduce risk before going big.

Job 3: Make It Happen - deliver at scale and make sure people actually use what you build.

What are Simple Rules?

The model contains simple rules. These are short principles drawn from experience that help you make better decisions. Jobs, tasks, and plays help you put those rules into practice.

What is a Play?

A Play is a method or tool that helps you apply a rule or complete a task. Use the recommended Plays first for simpler projects before exploring others.
