How to build a contingency that works

Enjoy delivering highly successful projects. Connect with moments of inspiration.

This email has taken me 10 years

I’ve wanted to make this tool available for a long time.

It started in 2016 when I was working with a major engineering organisation and tried to get an internal version of this approach adopted. They weren’t ready for it, but I’ve used the technique for years.

“Put simply, you want the contingency that your project needs, not what you want. There’s a big difference.”

Get contingency right and:

  • You get the support you need
  • You deliver and look good
  • You deliver without burning people out.

The key is taking insights from previous projects, and how they performed.

This is the first time that I’ve been able to turn it into a simple, easy-to-use tool that anyone can run quickly.

What the tool does

It helps you calculate a contingency by combining:

  • Your current estimate (cost, time, or benefits)
  • Your risk appetite (how confident you need to be)
  • Data from similar past projects (what actually happened)
This one will help you change the game.
